Friskis&Svettis Quick Facts 2009

1991, Friskis&Svettis Brussels was founded by a group of enthusiasts in and around the Waterloo area. It has the legal form of an asbl/bvba, with the Annual General Meeting as it’s highest decision-making body.

2009, Friskis Brussels has approx. 640 members and almost 80 functionaries, whereof more than 25 licensed instructors, all working on a non-profit basis. We offer about 40 sessions per week, with more than 10 different varieties and intensities, in and around Brussels.

• As a means to reach a wider audience and demonstrate our concept, Friskis Brussels has for the last 10 years offered free outdoor sessions in the Parc Cinquatenaire in central Brussels. The bi-weekly sessions in 2009 attracted up to 600 participants per session.

• Friskis Brussels is the only Friskis&Svettis club outside Scandinavia that offers local training of instructors. Since 2003, approx. 15 new instructors have been licensed.

• Friskis is in total comprised of 156 non-profit sports associations. The corresponding number in 2000 was 130.

• 477,665 members 2008. An increase of 7.9% since 2007 and an increase of 106% since 2000. In 2009 Friskis&Svettis will achieve the milestone of half a million members around Europe.

• There are currently 444 420 training members in Sweden, 28,754 in Norway and 4,491 in Aberdeen, Brussels, Helsinki, Copenhagen, London, Luxembourg, Paris and Vanda.

15,152 persons partake in a Friskis&Svettis association. 6,710 are leaders/instructors and 6,107 are hosts/receptionists. 546 persons, i.e., 3.6% of the total are employed by an association. Most of the employees also have a voluntary commitment as, for example a leader or instructor.

• 111 associations in Sweden, 37 associations in Norway and associations in Helsinki, Vanda, Copenhagen, Brussels, Paris, Luxembourg, London and Aberdeen.

• In total 817 new leaders and instructors educated and qualified/licensed during 2008. Friskis&Svettis educates its own leaders and instructors.

1978, Friskis&Svettis was founded in Stockholm by Johan Holmsäter. After only six months the association had 1,450 members.
