Value 10: Every individual and every idea is important

Published on October 15, 2019

As you know, Friskis&Svettis is a sports organization entirely run by volunteers. But it’s more than that. Its members, instructors included, volunteer their time, energy and skills because they believe in it and what it represents.

Did you know that, when they graduate, each Friskis instructor is given a book listing the 12 Friskis values? These values encapsulate all the lessons and teachings that the instructors learn during their months of training and get to the heart of what exercising with Friskis is about.

To that end we have asked our volunteers (instructor, host, board members, etc.) to share their favorite Friskis values and to describe what it means to them how it helps them in their friskis role. It represents both an illustration of what we believe in as an organisation as well as to better show just how these people turn a sports experience into a Friskis experience.

We are Friskis. These are our values.

Value 10: EVERY INDIVIDUAL AND EVERY IDEA IS IMPORTANT (Annika)

You are likely to have seen Annika at many of our sessions though you might not know what an integral part of the Friskis family she is. She is one of many whose constant work behind the scenes permits the proper running of our association. For that reason she told us that her favorite Friskis value was: EVERY INDIVIDUAL AND EVERY IDEA IS IMPORTANT.

The energy driving Friskis forward is precious.
It comes from almost a hundred unpaid volunteers.
Some are very visible, like the instructors and hosts.
Some you won’t recognize even when you see them.
They are the people doing the administrative tasks in the background, managing communication, providing IT and technical support for the premises…the list is endless.

And we all have ideas on how to make Friskis an even better experience for our members. We are constantly on the look-out for an even better hall, better brooms, better loudspeakers, better sessions and that killer song that, all combined, will make the participants leave the sessions with a big happy grin on their faces.

To allow all these great ideas to become reality, we need the tolerant and encouraging spirit which  characterizes Friskis. When a great idea pops into someone’s head, we should try it out, so that it might one day become reality. The freedom to try even silly things it what allows us make great leaps forward. Though some initiatives will fail, the benefit of the successful ones will outweigh the failures by far – and even the failures will let us grow, as individuals and as a group.

It gives us confidence to develop, and to lift other people up, to go out and do great things in their turn. This is the true Friskis spirit!

Now that you’ve heard her thoughts, let’s take a moment to better know our beloved instructor. Originally from Sweden, she has been attending Friskis since the late 80s and has been a member since 2005.
She confesses that she is normally a lazy person so Friskis is a great way for her to actually get up from the couch and do some sports! She loves the mix of people that she finds in Brussels and at Friskis. She is a firm believer that life is only as fun as you make it and so she finds that life with Friskis, with its delightful mix of people,  is very fun indeed!

You can enjoy Spinning Distance Sessions with Annika every Tuesday at 12:30 – 13:15 and Spinning Intervals the first Thursday of every month at 19:15-20:15 at JIMS Jourdan.
